Akwa Ibom: Tribunal Upholds PDP Victory at polls

By Our Staff Reporter The National and State House of Assembly Election Petition Tribunal, sitting in Uyo, the Akwa Ibom state capital, has upheld the victory of the Senator Representing Akwa Ibom North West Senatorial District in the National Assembly, Senator Christopher Ekpenyong of the Peoples Democratic party, PDP.   The Tribunal which gave its final judgement at ten O' clock in the night dismissed the case brought before it by the APC Candidate for the Senatorial District in the last general elections Senator Godswill Akpabio.   The Chairman of the panel Justice W.O AKANBI stated that the petitioner failed to bring any witness from the polling units and could not prove substantial non-compliance with the Electoral Act.   The court by a majority Judgement of two justices dismissed the petition and upheld as valid the declaration of Senator Christopher Ekpenyong as the winner of the February 23, 2019 elections.   In another judgement the tribunal Confirmed the victo...

Why corruption persists in Nigeria - Lumumba

A former director of the Kenyan anti-corruption agency, Prof. Patrick Lumumba, on Tuesday, said the reason why corruption still thrived in the country was because the people were not yet tired of the practice. He said in a society such as Nigeria where people still celebrated those that fraudulently enriched themselves, corruption would continue to thrive. Speaking at the opening session of the 49th annual conference of the Institute of Chartered Accountants of Nigeria, he said the day Nigerians would become tired of corrupt practices, the actions that would follow would put an end to graft. No one was willing to assit us" By Abasifreke Bassey It was a sad moment for duo of Emmanuella Bassey, a child reporter and Daniel Charles, an ENG Camera operator of the Akwa Ibom kids Press Club when they learnt that their nomination to attend a two week holiday training in Ontario, Canada for media kids club from 13 countries was canceled. The cancellation it was learnt, was as a result of their inability to get their international passports ready and which they were to take to Lagos for the processing of they visas. The two were nominated when their news entries and documentaries were selected as one of the three best amongst the lot received. Lamenting the loss of the rare opportunity, the 16 year old kid camera man, Daniel Charles said his father who's a broadcast Journalist was unable to source for funds to procure the needed documents. The Broadcast Journalist and Media for Development Expert made this know during an event to mark the memorial of the demise of his mother, Mrs. Imah Bassey Silas in Uyo. Comrade Bassey noted the lack of peace and unity among the people of Ward 9, Ikono-Uyo and Ikono Clan in general and pointed out that the sad trend had made development elude the clan which had suffered gross neglect since the creation of the state. Akwa Ibom journalist buried amid tears...

The town of Ikot Ekang in Etinan Local Government Area was thrown into river of tears as one of their illustrious son, Comrade Andrew Obot was laid to rest at his hometown admist tears from coursemates, media colleagues, family & well wishers. The deceased aged 29 was a student of Mass Communication, Akwa Ibom State Polytechnic as well as an editor, reporter, preacher, novelist & poet. He was the first son & child in the family. It was gathered that the deceased died from injuries sustained from an auto-crash on Friday 21st December, 2018 at Itak junction along the Ikot Ekpene - Uyo road. The sad event was attended by the Special Assistant to the Governor on Local Media, Mr. Uko Umoh, members of the NUJ led by the state secretary, Comrade Amos Etuk, students & staffs of the department of mass communication led by her Head, Mr. Daniel Evans Eshett, online media influencers, family members & well wishers. May his soul rest in peace, Amen!
