INEC KICK STARTS CONTINIOUS VOTER REGISTRATION IN UYO
REGISTRATION EXERCISE IS CIVIC RESPONSIBILITY, NOT POLITICAL PARTY AFFAIR
- Imoh Okon tells Uyo people as INEC begins continuous voters registration
Executive Chairman of Uyo Local Government, Elder (Hon.) Imoh Okon has urged the people of Uyo Local Government to see the soon-to-commence continuous voter registration as part of their civic responsibility and not a PDP or APC affair, stressing that political parties have no hand in voters registration.
The Chairman stated this during a joint meeting between Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) and stakeholders of Uyo from all political parties held at the instance of the Uyo LG INEC Electoral Officer.
The meeting which took place at the Uyo LG INEC office along Ikot Akpan Abia had stakeholders of Uyo from all political parties in attendance including Obonganwan Dora Ebong of APC, the Uyo PDP Chapter Chairman, Prince Idorenyin Orok, Chairman Uyo Youth Caucus, Comrade Idorenyin Umoh, Chairman, Uyo Youth Council, Comrade Leo Isua, Special Assistant to the Governor, Ekpeno Gold among others.
Speaking, the Chairman said the voters registration should be taken as a very important excersie by those who do not have Permanent Voters' Card (PVC), reiterating that there is no partiality or partisanship attach to registration of voters.
While reminding all electorates that without the PVC, no one will be able to vote for candidates of their choice in the upcoming 2019 general election, Elder Imoh Okon emphasized that no political party or ward will be given preferential treatment over another on the course of the registration.
He further called on the security agencies in Uyo Local Government to give strong security support to INEC as they begin the registration exercise, even as he charged the people of Uyo to cooperate with the INEC team as they arrive their respective wards.
The Chairman who was flanked by his Vice, Ukai Udeme Emmanuel and the former Transition Chairman of Uyo, Hon. Justin Ekong also thanked INEC for giving chance to those who do not have PVC to get theirs in preparation for the election, assuring that his council, rather than interfere on the INEC's job, will only give the required support in mobilizing the people from all the villages of Uyo to participate in the registration exercise.
Earlier, the INEC Electoral Officer for Uyo, Mba Onyeamaeze said INEC is ready and committed to making sure that every Nigerians of acceptable age have their voters card and therefore assured that those without PVC will get their without stress or delay.
While pleading for corporation from the Uyo stakeholders, the electoral officer said all equipment and logistics have been put in place for the commencement of the exercise which he said will last from today 22nd January till 20th March, 2018.
